SOFT EDGES

"...laughter comes

often enough

to soften the edge."

Audre Lorde

Soft Edges is an artistic research platform created by Mayıs Rukel and Lucie Gérard.

The platform was founded with the idea of creating year-long, deep
dives into texts, art works, films and artistic research we find important and relevant to our
interests and practices, analysed with a slow, attentive pace.

The first instalment of Soft Edges focused on the text Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good by adrienne maree brown, and took the form of a 12-episode podcast on Spotify as well as a 3-hour performance-workshop offered at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam.

Our podcast gathered more than 300 monthly listeners, among them was the author adrienne maree brown herself who shared the project with her own audience.

Graphic design by Yuri Sato.

Original music by Patrick Walinga.

Workshop

“Pleasure activism is the work we do to reclaim our whole, happy, and satisfiable selves from the impacts, delusions, and limitations of oppression and/or supremacy.”

-amb

Pleasure Activism, written and gathered by adrienne maree brown and published in 2019 by the AK Press, is one of the foundational texts for my practice just as it is for my dear friend, artist & filmmaker Lucie Gérard.

We offer a 3-hour long workshop performance consisting of sound and video pieces, music, spoken word, discussions & prompts aiming to generate a deep understanding of this essential work.

Our first workshop took place in March 2022 at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam, commissioned by the master's program Ecologies of Transformation.
