Radical Roots
Teenagers and Families

A three-day workshop with teenage residents and their families in AZC Arnhem.

On our first day, we arrived with a selection of rice-based recipes and a central question: How do we share a table? Around dishes familiar in their many forms, we spoke of meal rituals from our cultures, the names we give ingredients, and the ways we might continue to share a table as a surface for gathering, shaped by what each one of us brings. The tablecloth served as the main source material for the publication we co-created with participants.

On the second day, we brought bao, with thoughts on containers as part of nourishment itself. Wrapping up, packing in, folding and sealing: to be steamed, to be fried, to be eaten raw. The bao held what was carefully chosen, wrapped to be moved; into a pan, onto a plate, into someone’s hands. We reflected on other wrapped foods and the intrigue of what they hold inside. What have we wrapped and brought with us in our journeys to this place?

The third and final day was about sweetness. We began by sharing sweet words from our languages, their meaning, how they feel to receive. Working with teenagers this time meant navigating conflicts within the group. Open conversations helped. Speaking of sweetness reminded us of the need for solidarity, for building a sense of home together. The rest of the day unfolded in harmony, with new friendships taking shape. As jars of sweet fruit were packed to take home, we finished assembling the publication designed by Sankrit Kulmanochawong, using the recipes we’d explored over the three days.
