Radical Roots
Plot(ting) a Cuban Cantina

Gerrit Rietveld Academie
2024
In Collaboration with Lauren Gonzalez Alvarez
Comissioned by GRA Art & Spatial Praxis research group

Invited by curator Liza Prins from the Lectoraat Art & Spatial Praxis, we created a food intervention in dialogue with the release of the publication Plot(ting), grounded in the foundational theoretical framework of Jamaican critic Sylvia Wynter (born in Cuba, 1928).

For this intervention, we collaborated with Lauren Gonzalez Álvarez, a Cuba-born migrant chef living in the Netherlands, and her friends. Together, we gathered around the space held by food to evoke memories of belonging, tenderness, and ancestral care. The cantina became a living, breathing space of shared nourishment and reflection. Cooking became a method of connection and remembering, fitting to Wynter's concept of the plot.
