Solar Harvest: Gesturing Sunlight Memories

AZC Willinklaan
2024
In collaboration with Pluk! and TheWastetoSuccess
Comissioned by Stichting de Vrolijkheid

For three days, we gathered with resident families beneath the summer sun of Amsterdam Nieuw-West, to simply rehearse a community together.

Nourished by Pluk!’s agroecological farming practices and their fresh, beautiful harvest, and guided by TheWastetoSuccess’s approach to food and collectivity, we transformed an art atelier into a kitchen, a dining table, where we deeply practice the art of encounters.

Through shared recipes, we found common ground in the soil, the keeper of our migration stories. We recognized a common spirit in the sun, which nourishes all beings across the territories we live, dream, and belong to. And in the vegetables that convert sunlight into sustenance, we found a language for life in community.

Food became our storytelling device. In harvesting, cooking, and eating it, we shaped a communal planter rooted in pleasure and rest. A space emerged: offering choice, invitation, and creative, delicious ways of being together.

During our visit to the farm, we greeted the soil, worms, chickens, pigs, nightshades, and snails. We sang songs, eating flowers nestled in our fresh salads. We got lost in translation, only to find one another again through gestures of weeding, watering, digging, and playing.

At last, we gathered the memory of these three days in a soundscape, a glimpse into the multiplicity of conversations and exchanges we had. For our visual publication, we invited the sun to join us as guest writer, drawer, and photographer, using the cyanotype technique. And alongside this digital record, our final piece was a cotton tablecloth imprinted with the tools that transformed our vegetables and ingredients into a  banquet.
